A new study conducted in Queensland, Australia has found University students are suffering more stress than the rest of the population and are not seeking help.
Everyday, students are faced with pressures such as: academic demands, financial pressure, work life, cultural and language differences and it can lead to high levels of psychological distress including depression and anxiety; a far cry from the perception that student life is ‘carefree’.
Dr Helen Stallman, psychologist and researcher at the University of Queensland said
“8.3% of males and 13.8% of females aged 20 to 24 in the general population suffered from some form of psychological distress, compared with 13.8% male and 28.4% female university students.”
“[Most alarmingly, the majority of students did not seek help but they kept their worries to themselves] perhaps because of a lingering social stigma attached to seeking help for psychological problems” Dr Stallman said.
She said it was up to General Practitioners to ask University students how they were coping and if required refer them to counseling because it is unlikely the students will acknowledge their problems.
The results will be published in the next edition of the journal: Australian Family Physician.
