Many Australians (especially women and children) are not obtaining enough iodine in their food; confirmed in Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s latest Australian Total Diet Study.
“Insufficient iodine intake, particularly in groups such as pregnant women, babies, and young children, is of great concern.” said Parliamentary Secretary of Health and Ageing Senator Jan McLucus, who released the results.
“Mild to moderate iodine deficiency can result in children having learning difficulties and can affect the development of motor skills and hearing. In extreme cases, children can be born with severe intellectual disability.”
Ten per cent of toddlers were iodine deficient. Whilst 70% of woman aged 19-49 were not receiving the RDI (recommended daily intake) for iodine of 100-200mcg/day.
