Specially formulated to assist and relieve visual fatigue and eye strain, Eye Tonic combines the best of traditional herbal and scientifically validated ingredients. With bilberry to assist healthy eye function and improve night vision, omega-3 fish oils to improve eye lubrication, and vitamins A, B1 and B2 to help eyes guard against fatigue, Eye Tonic is recommended for ongoing relief from eye fatigue and sight impairments for people of all ages.
BILBERRY
Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) comes from the blueberry family, possessing high levels of anthocyanosides (flavonoids). Bilberry alleviates many eye afflictions such as eye fatigue, night blindness, eye inflammation and macular degeneration by improving the blood supply to the eyes and by strengthening the capillaries that surround the eyes. Not surprisingly bilberry also assists in the prevention of cardiovascular problems such as atherosclerosis, abnormal blood clotting, varicose veins, haemorrhoids and hypertension by improving blood circulation.
Evidence suggests that the active constituents of bilberry also strengthen the walls of blood vessels, reduce inflammation, and stabilise tissues containing collagen (such as tendons, ligaments, and cartilage).
Bilberry possesses potent antioxidant properties which inhibit free radical activity. Research conducted on bilberries have revealed its pharmacological properties, including:
- Cataracts: Clinical studies have shown that bilberry, can prevent the development of senile cataracts.
- Macular degeneration: preclinical and clinical studies show that bilberry can prevent macular degeneration.
- Myopia: studies demonstrated that long-term use of bilberry improved the vision of normally nearsighted people. Retinal sensitivity, visual clarity and twilight vision were improved with a decrease in photosensitivity were reported in myopic patients.
- Night blindness: improved night vision through bilberry’s action on the pupil. Additionally, bilberry assists in improving day blindness.
FISH OIL & TUNA OIL (OMEGA 3 - DHA & EPA)
Fish oil and tuna oil contain omega-3 (DHA and EPA) and vitamin A that are beneficial for the treatment of eye disorders. Research has revealed that women with a higher consumption of omega-3 have a reduced risk of dry eye syndrome and DHA assists in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (ARMD). Supplemental DHA may enhance the function of cones and rods, improving eye sight and thereby alleviating night blindness that is commonly associated with dyslexia.
EPA is also essential for good eye sight. EPA concentrates in cell membranes of the retina, and is involved in the conversion of light into nerve impulses.
RETINYL PALMITATE (VITAMIN A)
Retinyl palmitate is the principal form of vitamin A used in the treatment of retinopathy, a non-inflammatory degenerative disease of the retina. Vitamin A has been used and proven effective for decades as a treatment for various vision-related conditions, including night blindness, cataracts, conjunctivitis, retinopathy and macular degeneration. Not surprisingly a deficiency in vitamin A may lead to conjunctivitis, double vision, dry eye, and eye inflammation.
THIAMINE (VITAMIN B1)
Studies have shown that taking thiamine orally reduces the occurrence of cataract formation. Long term use of riboflavin and/or thiamin is associated with a reduction in the progression of age-related lens opacification, while vitamin B1 deficiency is often found in glaucoma patients.
RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2)
Vitamin B2 concentrates in the retina and is a component of visual pigments, improving the general health of the eyes. Riboflavin can alleviate eye tearing, impaired vision and eye inflammation that occurs with eye fatigue while a deficiency can lead to persistently bloodshot eyes and eye inflammation. Riboflavin also assists in the prevention of cataracts as demonstrated in a large-scale population-based study that found that a high dietary intake of riboflavin is associated with a reduced risk of nuclear cataracts.
WHAT IS SPECIAL ABOUT EYE TONIC?
PM Eye Tonic’s Bilberry is supplied by Indena, a manufacturer herbal raw materials that meet pharmaceutical grade standards. Indena’s bilberry possesses a high content of anthocyanosides (36%), and is the only bilberry extract with proven efficacy and safety profiles.
Numerous studies have been conducted to identify the pharmacological activities of anthocyanosides from Vaccinium myrtillus berries and to assess their clinical efficacy. The most pivotal studies have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits in regard to capillary resistance, reducing abnormal vascular permeability and antioxidant activity. These pharmacological findings have suggested a potential clinical application in the treatment of vascular disorders of the retina due to diabetes and hypertension (retinopathy) and in the management of symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency. Bilberries also promote the resynthesis of retinal pigments (rhodopsin) with clinical evidence to suggest that bilberry extract is beneficial in improving visual acuity and relieve symptoms of eye fatigue due to overuse.
Toxicological studies have shown that bilberries have an excellent safety and tolerability profile where single oral doses of 3,000mg/kg induced no significant side effects. Further, long term doses of 80-480mg/kg once daily over a period of six months did not induce any adverse events. A post-marketing surveillance study in more than 2000 patients was performed to assess the tolerability profile over several months of treatment with bilberries as used in Eye Tonic with no side effects. Confirming its excellent safety profile, bilberries have been studied and proposed for the treatment of symptoms associated with venous insufficiency during pregnancy.
The fish oil supplied in PM Eye Tonic comes from Ocean Nutrition, the First US Pharmacopeia-verified bulk fish oil ingredient manufacturer. The USP has verified these ingredients to ensure that the fish oil meets label claims for identity, strength, quality and purity; is prepared under accepted manufacturing practices to ensure consistent batch quality.
