SYLIMARIN
The findings of over 300 clinical and laboratory studies have demonstrated that milk thistle can produce a protective and curative effect on the liver following damage resulting from highly hepatotoxic compounds. Syrin incorporates a host of hepatoprotective compounds, including silybin – a principal component of a flavonoid mixture known as silymarin.
Both silybin and silymarin assist in protecting liver cells by producing a powerful antioxidant called glutathione. Silymarin can raise glutathione levels in the liver by up to 50%, protecting cell membranes from free radical-mediated oxidative damage. Silymarin and silybin also protect red blood cell membranes against oxidative damage and haemolysis (breaking down of the red blood cells), which are caused by red blood cell toxins.
Silymarin stimulates protein synthesis to accelerate the regeneration and production of liver cells returning the liver to a healthy, functional state. Animal studies have provided further evidence for this role, showing silymarin to function as a hepatoprotector against solvents such as ethanol (alcohol) and carbon tetrachloride.
SCHIZANDRA
Schizandra increases metabolic activity by increasing hepatic glycogen content, and has been shown to possess hepatoprotective properties through regeneration and detoxification.
CYNARA SCOLYMUS LEAF (GLOBE ARTICHOKE)
Now being used as a cholesterol lowering agent, globe artichoke stimulates the secretion of bile, emulsifying fats, and aiding cholesterol and toxin clearance. INOSITOL
